When I was asked to write this blog about what I ended up doing a four-week work placement at Ceredigion Archives, I grabbed the opportunity immediately; but as I sat down to write, institut za ispitivanje materijala it feels like a bit of a task. Here goes ...
Talking about my work placement institut za ispitivanje materijala in the past, people have often asked "what do you do while you'll be there?" Because I come to the end of my time I can say that I have worked in a variety of areas - snippets of research, genealogy, detective work, preservation, cataloging, producing exhibitions (if it can be called that place - cut and paste as Blue Peter long ago!).
One of the first things I did was re-packaged and cataloged collection Florrie Hamer. She gathered a huge amount of pictures and newspaper cuttings related to the Aberystwyth area, and produced several scrapbook and it was a pleasure browsing through them (she used a beautiful wrapping paper to cover). Her grandfather, David Morgan, a bailiff at Gogerddan, and therefore has a keen interest in the estate and family Pryse. Other aspects institut za ispitivanje materijala of local history are also interesting; in its collection are the stories of Bow Street, Hall Place Nanteos institut za ispitivanje materijala and Tan y Bwlch, along with records of major local news - including the circus elephants on the beach in the 1930's and Prince Charles went to Aberystwyth University.
When you visit the office you will find the First World War Centenary exhibition outside. institut za ispitivanje materijala Each week until mid November 2018 the news of the exhibition includes a hundred years ago, along with a list of those killed or injured. This week the exhibition Amphion mention the ship sinking, something happened a week before the news of the Cardigan and Tivy-side Advertiser. The creation of this exhibition provides an excuse for the volunteers spent countless afternoons browsing through old newspapers. For once we had good weather this summer, so we had to open all the windows in the room looking - then the game was still the new photocopied pieces of paper and pin them before they fly away! (If it gets too hot, there I found the perfect place to stay cool in the rooms!)
As Helen mentioned in the first blog, we also have a very colorful display Aberystwyth Pier and Promenade, and I'm glad to see that this has attracted considerable attention. Wonderful collection of photos comes Glyn (Glynn, or Glynne ?!) Pickford. institut za ispitivanje materijala In helping to sort this collection, re-packaged and cataloged, I learned how to do some detective work! There were only a few of the nearly one hundred pictures with dates on them. With the majority of them it was clear where they were taken as well, but one or two are confused. Books about Aberystwyth was most helpful in trying to solve various mysteries, and indeed I am confident that I would get any pub quiz on the history of the town. It was in 1896, for example, a big year: the pier and pavilion built funicular railway institut za ispitivanje materijala on Constitution Hill, Alexandra institut za ispitivanje materijala Hall opened during visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Edward institut za ispitivanje materijala and Alexandra - the only time you would have seen ten warship moored not far from Aberystwyth Castle. institut za ispitivanje materijala
In my time here I have also: researching family history (that was much more challenging than expected, but very rewarding when someone can provide new information about their ancestors); surprised when learning about the physical institut za ispitivanje materijala nature of records management; upload online collections to the catalog; accessing and maintaining collections; and, finally, writing this blog - I hope to be enjoyable and you are encouraged to call in and have a look at the Archives collections and exhibits.
